PGL wins top-team race as BLAST faces payment claims

Payment claims and company response

SPUNJ discussed the payment concerns on an episode of the HLTV Confirmed podcast. Dust2.us reported that he had heard from people in his professional circle who had gone unpaid for periods he regarded as significant.

The report describes BLAST as laying off staff amid a difficult financial situation. In response to a request for comment, a BLAST representative said the company had recently restructured to support continued growth in 2027 and beyond, with the changes leading to a limited number of redundancies in the UK and Denmark.

BLAST’s representative did not address the specific payment allegations in the response reported by Dust2.us. No number of affected roles was disclosed in the account.

A competing schedule and team choices

PGL’s Bucharest tournament will run at the same time as BLAST Bounty Winter, according to the report. It said all top teams on the October VRS elected to attend PGL’s event.

The report identified BLAST’s smaller prize pool and the absence of an arena for playoff matches as possible factors in the team choices, rather than established reasons. It also noted that BLAST events involve more player time for content and media commitments, which players tend to dislike.

BLAST has been a prominent organiser in tier-one Counter-Strike for years. SPUNJ warned that growing competition from PGL, difficulty attracting major teams and weaker sponsor-facing numbers could put further pressure on the company’s position. Timely payments are also an ongoing concern across esports, where delays can undermine trust between organisers and the people who work with them.

Restructuring points to 2027

The stated aim of BLAST’s restructuring is to position the business for growth from 2027 onwards. Its next competitive test comes as Bounty Winter shares a calendar window with PGL’s Bucharest event at the start of that year.

The report did not provide a timetable for resolving the payment concerns SPUNJ raised. The tournament overlap and team attendance are set to put BLAST’s ability to attract leading Counter-Strike line-ups under scrutiny as the events approach.
